Finally finished this piece. I brought this handmade papel amate bark paper back from Mexico City when I visited last April during my residency at Apapacho Pro Artes Mex 🇲🇽 It sat in my studio for a whole year, carrying all those memories and the energy of the @mnantropologia Anthropology Museum in CDMX , Aztec history, the weather, the amazing food, and the beautiful smiles of the people I met.
I finally just completed it.
Working into the raw bark fibers with thread, ink, and dried seeds and grass leaves I gathered, an imaginary self portrait started coming through. It feels like a mask made of soil and seed a way of letting everything I experienced in Mexico move through me and settle into something real. #mask #threads #barkpaper #selfportrait #junyang
I created this portrait during my residency at @mashousestudio
It reflects healing and the many layers of identity we carry. The body holds memories in ways we do not always understand.
Sometimes breaking down is part of becoming who we really are.
